TANIA JULIAN

Tania, Sophie and Noah

Born in Mainz, Germany, Tania Julian has resided in Atlanta since 1996 where she practiced Interior Design until 2004. As a teenager she was inspired by art museums and absorbed a deep sense of art history while studying design in Frankfurt.

In preparation for her studies she was a private student of renowned artist Karol Rousin. She graduated summa cum laude from the Art Institute of Atlanta with a degree in Interior design in 2000 and began her career at the mod firm idea|span where she refined her design principles and explored the psychology of space.
It was during this time she discovered her passion for pottery and the immediate gratification of clay.

The focus of her work are hand-thrown porcelain vases that draw inspiration from 20th century modernism. Feminine small-necked bottle shapes emerged from the ancient fertility archetype the egg. The medium's smooth surface challenged her to explore the subtle duality of glazed shiny areas and the matte surface of the porcelain in several designs.
Another focus are the wallhangings. Going against the smooth surface this time and working on manipulating the porcelain into a controlled pattern is another approach for Tania Julian. She has been completed several installations of wallhanging groupings with patterns running throughout at spas country clubs & hotels.
The third venture are the angels which started taking shape as a means of reclaiming the expensive medium. The recycled souls have been attracting many earthly ones and are selling heavenly.
